POMPEII


The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania. Pompeii, was mostly destroyed and buried under 6 m of ash during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The town was founded in the 7th century BC and was captured by the Romans in 80 BC. By the time of its destruction, its population was probably 20,000.
The eruption was destructive for the town. The Roman witer Pliny the Younger, saw the eruption from a distance and described all that there happened.
